Bodie is now almost 3 years old.  She is as tall as her mother already.  She has a baby brother, Kookaroo .  She was fortunate to be with her mother the day her brother arrived.  To say she was curious is an understatement.  Now her Mom is due to have an Iceman baby.  Bodie is due herself the end of May with an Iceman baby.

 Boudicca's Story

On Tuesday, June 28, 2005, Kaipana gave birth to a new baby girl who I have named "Boudicca" (pronounced "bow-dee'-ka").   It means "Victorious".
"Bodie" was born premature, weighing 14 pounds without the strength to stand or nurse.    We quickly made sure that she was free of fluids in her lungs and administered 1cc Bose and 1cc Vitamin ADE.

At 10:30 a.m., she began to show more signs of life and after 45 minutes, she was able to take 2.5 ounces of colostrum and went back to sleep.

At 8:00 p.m., she was still leaking fluids from the umbilical cord, so a clamp was applied and re-iondined.   This eliminated the problem.

Mom was having trouble adjusting to being a new mom and wasn't quite sure what she was supposed to do, nursing was not an option to her at this time.   However, she remained attentive and concerned about this new little life.

Bodie was supplemented with colostrum every 2 to 3 hours and mom was milked in the meantime to help alleviate any milk build up and to make sure that Bodie was getting the nourishment she needed.   Bodie has a strong appetite, so she flourished with each feeding.

On day 2, Bodie was given an enema to help her eliminate as she still was unable to stand without assistance.

At 5:30 p.m., Bodie was able to stand all by herself and she began to get used to her legs.  Her appetite remained strong.

At 7:00 p.m., Kaipana and Bodie bonded and Kaipana allowed Bodie to nurse for the very first time.   A huge sigh of relief was felt and it was all downhill from here.

She was weighed tonight at 16 pounds.

On Day 3, at 7:30 p.m., Bodie and mom were allowed to venture out with the rest of the herd and Bodie had her first little kick in the air and jumped around.   It was great to see her energy.

All of our hard work was rewarded at that very moment and we knew that Bodie was a fighter and that all would be well.  She's a little miracle and was victorious (hence her name "Boudicca")  in overcoming the hard odds against her as a preemie.

She weighs 20 pounds now and is gaining a pound a day and her ears began to stand up.

The power of love and care helps pull even the most fragile lives through giving them the strength and zest to survive.

Bodie is now just a short time away from having her first baby.  I am excited to see the first Chocolate/Iceman cross.  Bodie and her mom will both have Iceman babies in May 2008.  Bodie has grown into a lovely female.  She is clever and smart.  I have decided to give Bodie a little vacation for a couple of years to let her mature mentally before venturing out into the performance ring.  I'll have fun showing Mother and son together someday.  (I really do want a boy!)
I did play with Bodie on the obstacles after the March Magic show.  She of course did the obstacles flawlessly.  Too bad she can't stand still for an instant
